Toi ki uta, Toi ki tai, Toi ki te ao!
Te Ihorei is an exhibition that has produced and upholds the essence of Māori art excellence. The 12 artists were selected because they are leaders in their whānau, rohe and artforms. They are made up of six wāhine & six tāne, both established and emerging artists, and three of whom are current kaihaka. The works are mixed medium ranging from natural materials to 3D laser printing. Within Aotearoa, there are 12 regions that are represented at Te Matatini. Using that framework, ‘Te Ihorei’ is made up of a selection of 12 artists that whakapapa and/or live in those regions.
This exhibition was funded by Creative NZ, and kindly support by PĀTAKA Art + Museum
Tumarangai Sciascia (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu) is passionate about Māori arts and has grown a national and international network of Māori and Pasifika artists who he has supported over the years. Inspired by Te Māori, Toi Māori and his whānau kapa haka (haka group) Tamatea Arikinui – Tu’s whakaaro (idea) is to expose and share the true essence and beauty of our arts to Aotearoa New Zealand and the World. It’s been his ambition to delve into the curatorial side of the arts – Te Ihorei is Tu’s first exhibition, of which we know will not be his last.
